Where Light Meets Land
Where Light Meets Land explores the shifting boundary between earth, water and light, and the way the Australian landscape can hold traces of time, movement and memory.
Inspired by Australia’s ancient mountain ranges and vast, weathered terrain, the work is not a depiction of one particular place, but a feeling of this country. A landscape shaped by extremes. Harsh sun, exposed rock, dry earth and unforgiving conditions are built into the fractured, almost geological surface of the painting. Layers of ochre, stone and earth rise like mountain ranges, while pockets of blue appear like water finding its way through valleys and rock.
The work was created instinctively, allowing materials to crack, merge and resist control. I wanted the surface to feel as though it had existed long before the painting itself, slowly shaped by heat, water, wind and time.
And then there is the gold.
It spills and drips across the rugged surface, appearing only as the light finds it. The gold represents the wealth held within Australian soil, a quiet richness beneath a land that can, at first, appear harsh and unforgiving.
